The beautiful tourist spot at chittagong in Bangladesh
St. Martin may be a small island a part of the Bay of Bengal of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, and forming the southernmost a part of Bangladesh. there's alittle adjoining island that's separated at high water , called Chera Dwip. it's about 8 kilometres (5 miles) west of the northwest coast of Myanmar, at the mouth of the Naf River.
History:
Millennia ago, the island want to be an extension of the Teknaf. the primary settlement started 250 years ago by Arabian sailors who named the island 'Jazeera'. During British occupation the island named after the then Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mr. Martin as St. Martin Island. The local names of the island are "Narikel jinjira" which suggests 'Coconut Island', and "Daruchini Dwip" which suggests "Cinnamon island". it's the sole coral island in Bangladesh.
Administration:
The island makes the Saint Martin's Union Parishad. it's 9 villages/areas:
Paschim Para
Deil Para
Uttar Para
Majher Para
Purba Para
Konar Para
Nazrul Para
Golachipa
Inhabitants:
Most of the island's visitors 3,700 inhabitants live primarily from fishing. the opposite staple crops are rice and coconut. Being quite common on the island, algae are collected, dried, and exported to Myanmar. Between October and April, the fishermen from neighboring areas bring their caught fishes to the island's wholesale market. However, imports of chicken, meat and other foods are available from the mainland Bangladesh and Myanmar. because the centre and therefore the south are mainly farmland and makeshift huts, most of the permanent structures are round the far north.
During the season , due to the damaging conditions on the Bay of Bengal, the inhabitants haven't any scope to visit to the mainland and their life can become dangerous. there's a hospital on the island, but within the past there has often been no doctor.
Transportation:
The only thanks to reach St. Martin is by water transportation: boats and ships from Cox Bazar and Teknaf. the sole internal transport for island is non motorized van. The roads are made from concrete, and their condition are decent. All the hotels run generators until 11 PM which aren't allowed afterwards, in order that they then believe solar energy , which is popular throughout the island. there's no electricity supply from the national grid since a hurricane in 1991. The St. Martin island is about sun, sea and palm trees. During the day, it arrives alive with water and beach sports, with beach parties and bonfires lighting up the evening skies.
Tourism:
From 1989 to 2004, non-residential Bangladeshis and foreigners were the sole people permitted on the island; now residential Bangladeshis are allowed. St. Martin's Island has become a traveling spot, and five shipping liners run daily trips to the island. Travelers can book their trip either from Chittagong or from Cox's Bazar. the encompassing reef has an extension named Chera Dwip. alittle bush is there, which is that the only green part. People don't survive this part, so it's advisable for the tourists to travel there early and are available back by afternoon.
A number of efforts are proposed to preserve the several species of turtles that nest on the island, also because the corals, a number of which are found only on Narikel Jinjira. Parts of the reef are being moved to be sold to visitors.Nesting turtles are sometimes taken for food, and their hatching are often distracted by the twinkling lights along the beach. Fish, a couple of recently discovered, are being over fished. per annum the fishermen must venture further bent sea to urge their catch. Most of them use motor less boats.
It is possible to steer round the island during a day because it measures only 3 sq. mile, shrinking to about 2 sq. mi during high water . The island exists only due to its coral base, so removal of that coral risks erosion of the beach. due to this, St. Martin's has lost roughly 25% of its reef within the past seven years.
Sovereignty dispute and Shootings of St. Martin's fishermen:
Fishing is one among largest professional activities of St. Martin's Island's 5,500 residents; however, territorial disputes between Myanmar and Bangladesh have resulted during a state of tension between the countries which will erupt into violence, often targeting unarmed Bangladeshi fishermen. Below may be a brief summary of shooting incidents against St. Martin's fishermen:
On October 7, 1998 between three and five Bangladeshi fishermen were ruined by Burmese Navy forces just off the coast of St. Martin's Island.
On September 8, 1999 one Bangladeshi fisherman was shot and ruined by Burmese Navy forces near St. Martin's Island. Nine crewmen from the victim's fishing smack abandoned it, swam for his or her lives, and were rescued by Bangladeshi forces. The Bangladeshi government lodged a proper protest note to Myanmar.

In 2011 rovers attacked fishermen 5 km off the coast of St. Martin and ruined four of them.
On 6 October 2018, the govt of Myanmar updated its 2015-2018 map of Myanmar Information Management Unit showing St. Martin as a neighborhood of their sovereign territory and spread the maps in two global websites. Following the event, the Myanmar Ambassador in Dhaka was summoned by the govt of Bangladesh on 6 October 2018. Flag officer Mr Khurshed Alam affairs secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh handed over a strongly worded protest note to him. The Myanmar envoy said it had been a “mistake” to point out the St. Martin's Island as a part of his country's territory
Climate and weather:
The best weather is typically between November and February; this is often the main tourist season. Between March and July, cyclones can strike. The St. Martin island was devastated by a cyclone in 1991 but has fully recovered, and was untouched by the 2004 tsunami. Thus, March to July is off-season for tourists.
